Let’s go ‘baulatura’…

baulatura-1280x800.jpg

We are about to finish preparing the asparagus rows!

To achieve good baulatura, the typical mound of earth in which the asparagus grows and whitens, it is necessary to start with tempered, i.e. finely tilled, soil. The baulking machine creates the mound of earth, but has the advantage of keeping the soil soft and stable, so that the shoots will not find a surface that resists their release.

This is followed by the placement of the mulch sheet, which fulfils the task of

  • prevent the soil from becoming wet and compacted (which would prevent the shoots from escaping)
  • ensure natural weeding (weeds, once germinated, do not undergo the process of photosynthesis and die in the absence of light)
  • prevent light from penetrating as it is in the absence of light that asparagus remains as white as possible.
